SPRING TIDES & NORMAN AMBITION
Mont Saint-Michel — The Norman Abbey
Brussels → Mont Saint-Michel → Rouen (overnight)
Drive straight from Brussels to Mont Saint-Michel — one of the most extraordinary places in Europe. A fortified abbey rising from a tidal island, built by the Norman dukes from the 11th century onward. Richard I, Rollo's own son, granted it to Benedictine monks. Tides on 4 May: high tide 09:37 (11.96m) and 21:52 (12.05m) — arriving mid-morning means you catch the tide receding from its morning peak, with the full bay exposed by early afternoon. The causeway bridge is always passable. Tonight: drive to Rouen and check in to the Campanile Rouen Nord — Mont Saint-Aignan.
DAY PLAN
06:00
Depart Brussels. Drive to Mont Saint-Michel (~5h 45m via A2/E19, A26, A28, A84). Allow extra time for a comfort stop.

La Merveille

Never walk on the mudflats without a certified guide — the tidal surge is extremely fast and the bay has quicksand. Watch from the ramparts or causeway. Timing works: depart MSM ~16:30, arrive Campanile Rouen Nord ~19:15 — well within the 21:00 desk closing time.
